Yerba Buena Island Set to Host Luxurious Homes

Yerba Buena island is located in the middle of the Bay next to Treasure Island. The Yerba Buena Tunnel runs through its center and connects the western and eastern spans of the San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge.

The island is currently part of District 6 of the City and County of San Francisco, and it will soon become an enclave for the wealthy as developer Wilson Meany forges ahead with plans to transform the former military reservation into an exclusive luxurious residential community, much like what happened decades ago to Belvedere island in Marin just north of San Francisco.

Residents of Belvedere above enjoy views of San Francisco, Angel Island, Sausalito, the Golden Gate Bridge, San Francisco and Richardson Bays, and Mount Tamalpais. Similarly, Yerba Buena future residents will enjoy 360-degree views of the Bay, Alcatraz, San Francisco, Treasure Island, Oakland, East Bay and the Bay Bridge.

Developer Wilson Meany finally broke ground last Tuesday on a long-awaited, long-planned development on Yerba Buena island.

The developer specializes on building buildings in the San Francisco Bay Area and Los Angeles County, and says this about the project:

“Yerba Buena Island is a new, exceptionally unique residential community capturing sweeping, 360-degree views of the city skyline and surrounding natural beauty from the heart of San Francisco Bay. Envisioned to blend with the island’s diverse topography, forward-thinking, contemporary residences include townhomes, condominiums and flats, with floor plans designed to suit a range of lifestyles. Among architectural and design features are open-plan great rooms, expansive window walls, seamless indoor-outdoor living and highly curated finishes. Residents enjoy an array of wellness-focused lifestyle amenities, as well as miles of parks, open spaces, hiking and biking trails. Debuting in early 2020, Yerba Buena Island offers a living experience immersed in both nature and city life, situated a mere ten minutes from Downtown San Francisco.”

Curbed SF reports:

“The firm is marketing the 266 incoming homes as luxury condos and townhomes steeped in the natural beauty of the island setting. The homes will feature, among other things, views of San Francisco, the Bay Bridge, and the Golden Gate Bridge.”

The new development is part of San Francisco’s plan to remake Treasure Island as a dense hub of new housing.

Whereas adjacent Treasure Island is flat, manmade, and haunted by anxiety about radioactive leavings from the former Navy base, Yerba Buena Island is a smaller, natural space with less baggage. That leaves developers the opportunity to frame the island as an exclusive destination for expensive new SF homes.
