How to Get Back to Busy Work-Mode After a 3-Day Weekend

Coming back from a 3-day holiday weekend off isn’t easy. But your transition back to the work grind doesn’t have to be a total drag. In fact, there are some steps you can take on your first day back to work that can make the whole process much easier.

With some simple strategizing, you can get back into your usual work groove in no time:

  1. Get an early start

    “Get to bed early the night before, and start work the next day a little early,” Lynn Taylor, a national workplace expert and the author of “Tame Your Terrible Office Tyrant: How to Manage Childish Boss Behavior and Thrive in Your Job,” told Business Insider. “That will mitigate the workload avalanche and give you a head start, sans distraction.”

  2. Don’t stretch yourself thin

    Try not to schedule a ton of meetings and deadlines during your first day back. It will just leave you feeling overwhelmed and behind on your work.

    If you’re facing an avalanche of work, use your prioritizing skills, Taylor said:

    “Handle emergencies first. Decide what’s most important to your job, your clients, and your to-do list. Look at the big picture, not what comes to you sequentially. And say ‘no’ to low priority items hurled your way.”

  3. Get caught up

    Looking at your to-do list, try putting a time estimate next to every task, turning it into a kind of schedule with specific times and places. For example: Check email 8-9 AM, Follow-up phone calls 9-10AM, Lunch 1-2PM.

    When time’s up, it’s up. Don’t let yourself take 6 hours checking emails.

  4. Don’t get lost in your inbox

    As mentioned, beware of spending too much time checking emails or before you know it, the day is over and you have not done much. “It’s easy to get sucked into the vortex of responding to every email without considering whether it’s the best use of your time on the first day back,” Kerr said. “Don’t confuse email activity with productive work, so be strategic and only respond to email that are time sensitive.”

  5. Check in with your team and clients

    Check in with your team, your business partners, your staff and make sure you are all on the same page and projects are being worked on smoothly and are right on schedule. You should also return to connecting with your clients.

    “Let them know they’re top of mind with you and that you’re back if they need anything,” Kerr said. It’s a simple relationship-building touch point that can make a big impression.

  6. Take care of yourself

    In the midst of trying to plow through the first day back non-stop until everything is done, be sure to also be good to yourself. Take a break during the day, stretch, and eat well. It will increase your chances of being more productive. Kerr added that after work, try to resume your normal routine and get to bed at a decent hour.

  7. Stay focused

    There’s bound to be a bunch of distractions waiting for you back at the office.

    “People may ask you how your weekend was,” Taylor said. Social media and the internet may make you feel like everyone is out there ‘living life’ and no one’s working but you.

    Know this – people tend to post their ‘fun side’ in social media, it’s a facade. Get back to work and don’t waste time chatting or scrolling through the posts. Keep focus on your work, things you need to get done, and you’ll feel so accomplished at the end of the day.

  8. Think back on your 3-day weekend fun

    Instead of feeling jaded all day about being back and work, it’s okay to revisit fond memories from your 3-day weekend with gratitude.

    “Try to extend the state of bliss you achieved while gone as best you can,” Taylor said. “Remember, you are in control of your thoughts.”
