Best Spots to Watch the 4th of July Fireworks

4th of July, Independence Day. It all began on July 4, 1776, the day that represents the Declaration of Independence and the “birth of the United States of America as an independent nation.” Independent from the British Empire, the UK.

One of the nation’s best 4th of July firework shows is right here in San Francisco. The city pays somewhere in the range of $500,000 dollars prepping for fireworks show on San Francisco’s waterfront, so let’s find out the best spots to watch these colorful lights in the sky around the Bay Area.

1. Head bayside along Fisherman’s Wharf, Ghirardelli Square, Pier 39, Crissy Field, and the Marina Green to catch San Francisco’s annual fireworks extravaganza starting at approximately 9:30pm. Pier 39 will also be offering a free concert from San Francisco’s favorite 80s cover band, Tainted Love from 5 to 8pm.

2. Get on the Bay and under the action with a Fourth of July Fireworks Cruise to Angel Island. The cruise includes the ferry ride, a round trip shuttle to Battery Ledyard (firework viewing area), one hot beverage and live music. $85 for adults.

3. Head over to the sunny side of the bay and enjoy a festive day of classic July 4th food and fun. Jack London Square will play host to upwards of 10,000 visitors, all clamoring to jam to live music, shop local vendors, get the kids’ faces painted and eat, eat, eat backyard barbecue favorites all day long. A beer and cider garden will keep things nice and chill while you wait for fireworks to kick off.

4. The Berkeley Marina will celebrate the 4th in style with a fireworks show at 9:45pm and a 4th Festival all day from noon to 10pm.

5. Hop aboard the USS Hornet aircraft carrier in Alameda for a fireworks show paired with (what else?) patriotic music. This family-friendly event begins at 2pm, with fireworks at 9:15pm, and tickets run $25 for adults and $15 for kids. Active military and first responders get in free.

6. The San Francisco Symphony heads south to the Shoreline Amphitheater for a fireworks show with music from Star Wars, Pixar and more. Tickets range in price from $16 to $141.

7. The North Bay celebrates Independence Day in style at the Marin County Fair. Fireworks begin at 9:30pm every night through July 4th. Admission is $12–$20.

8. San Mateo folks, we haven’t forgotten about you. Check out Redwood City’s Annual Independence Day Festival. Kick off the fun with a 10am parade and spend the day enjoying food, live music, and activities before the fireworks show at 9:30pm.
